Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has offered to adopt a three-year-old boy who witnessed the fatal stabbing of his father in Mathare on Monday, January 20 morning.
Michael Oworo, 32, was attacked by suspected robbers as he escorted his son to a baby care center in the Mathare 4A area.
Witnesses said Oworo, a mason, was fatally stabbed while attempting to defend himself. He died at the scene before an ambulance could arrive.
His son, who was only a few meters away, was left distressed and crying after witnessing the brutal killing.
In a statement on X on Wednesday, January 22, Sonko expressed his sorrow over the incident.
“This has really heartbroken my heart. I have been saddened by this story of a little boy whose father was stabbed and killed by suspected thugs while taking him to school,” he wrote.
He also mentioned that Oworo had been a single parent, raising his son alone since he was three months old.

A lunch box containing ugali and omena, believed to be the father’s efforts to provide for his child, was found at the scene.
“The little boy cried as he watched his father being stabbed by the thugs. He looked helpless, and unfortunately, the father died before an ambulance could arrive,” Sonko added.
Sonko, known for his charitable efforts, immediately offered to take the child into his care.
“Since the child has now been left an orphan, as usual, let him be brought to me. I will pick from where the father left and continue raising the child,” he said.
This follows Sonko’s previous adoption of Satrine Osinya, a boy who survived a terror attack in 2014 that killed his mother.
Locals in Mathare voiced concerns about increasing insecurity in the area.
Residents said they believed the attack was part of a robbery attempt and Oworo may have fought back before being fatally wounded.
Police are investigating the incident and are working to apprehend the assailant.
THIS HAS REALLY HEARTBROKEN MY 💔 💔.
