Police in Mombasa have launched investigations into the alleged shooting of a 14-year-old boy by officers in Likoni, Mombasa County, on Tuesday, January 7.
The deceased, Hamisi Ibrahim, had reportedly left his grandmother's house after breakfast to see a friend and was found dead just a few minutes later.
According to the boy's mother, Fatuma Haji, she recounted hearing gunshots shortly after the boy left his homestead and found his body lying in a pool of blood.
The incident was confirmed by Likoni Sub-county Police Commander Geoffrey Ruheni.
In a statement, Ruheni explained that police officers were responding to a distress call on an alleged robbery in progress.
Ruheni said police met three juveniles suspected of having committed the robbery and the youths allegedly charged towards the police with machetes.
"They proceeded with pangas towards the police officers. The officers had no option but to use their firearms," he said.

However, Haji denied these claims, saying her son had left to see a friend and was innocent of any wrongdoing.
She said Ibrahim did not attend school that day because his uniform was still at the tailor's.
Haji described Ibrahim as a well-behaved child who was set to join Grade 9 on Wednesday, January 9, stating that any claims linking him to criminal activity were entirely unfounded.
“He finished having tea at my mother’s house and said he wanted to visit his friend while waiting for the tailor to finish his uniform. Moments later, we heard a gunshot. I’m heartbroken as a parent for my son to lose his life in such a painful manner.
"My son was not a thief, and I have never heard any allegations of criminal activity against him,” the grieving mother said while talking to members of the media.
The incident comes one week after increased police operations in the area, following several reported robbery cases and the recent arrest of eight suspects.
Justice is now being sought by the boy's family, who say that in case Ibrahim had any suspicions linked to him, the due process of law needed to be followed.
