Seven Arrested After University Student Dies Under Unclear Circumstances

Seven employees of Dalawa Hotel and Restaurant in Homa Bay County have been arrested following the death of Paul Sunday, a 24-year-old fourth-year student at Tom Mboya University.

According to police reports, the suspects were arrested on Friday, December 20, after Sunday was allegedly assaulted under unclear circumstances at the restaurant.

The suspects have been identified as Jacob Okeyo Omollo, Baraka Odhiambo Jude, Monica Atieno, David Ochieng, Arnoder Atieno, Kennedy Ouma Otieno, and Pamela Onyango Otieno.

The police report indicates that a Homa Bay County enforcement officer discovered Sunday tied to metal bars at the restaurant’s counter area, naked and severely beaten. 

The officer promptly notified the police, who arrived at the scene to find Sunday alive but in critical condition.

“Please be informed that a report was received from an Enforcement Officer of Homa Bay County that today at around 1:30 PM, he visited Dalawa Hotel and Restaurant, located within Homa Bay Township, and found some commotion there,” the police report reads in part.

Sunday, who was bleeding profusely, was rescued and rushed to Homa Bay County Referral Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival. 

His body has since been moved to the hospital mortuary, where an autopsy will be conducted to establish the exact cause of death.

The suspects remain in police custody and are set to appear in court on Monday as investigations continue.
