Nairobi Senator and ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna has distanced his party from what he termed as the “mess” created by the Kenya Kwanza administration.
Speaking during an interview with Citizen TV on Thursday, Sifuna rejected claims that ODM had any role in the controversial policy decisions currently facing backlash, including the proposed mortgaging of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).
Sifuna made it clear that ODM was not consulted on major policy decisions, such as the mortgaging of JKIA, saying, “ODM is not part of this government, but they are trying to drag us into this mess. Nobody asked ODM whether JKIA should be mortgaged; this is a policy proposal by Kenya Kwanza.”
In response to questions about whether ODM should share in the blame for the government's missteps, Sifuna rejected the comparison.
"It is concerning, but they are doing that because if we are all painted as bad people, we are in the same basket. We are not in the same basket, do I look like Ruku?" Sifuna remarked.
He stressed that ODM and Kenya Kwanza should not be treated as one entity.
The senator also criticized the government’s dealings with the Adani Group, which has sparked public outcry.
“Nobody believes that the Adani proposal was privately initiated. Many people suspect that the idea originated from here, and they (Adani Group) are only a front,” he said.
According to Sifuna, "trust deficit" in Kenya Kwanza’s handling of such deals has led to widespread mistrust.
Sifuna also dismissed claims that inclusion of ODM leaders into government positions would solve the grievances of the Kenyan public.
"Nobody should lie that Kenyans are happy," he remarked, adding that even the inclusion of leaders like Opiyo Wandayi, Wycliffe Oparanya, and John Mbadi has failed to address the pressing issues raised by Kenyans.
