Azimio la Umoja leader Raila Odinga has issued an apology to the media and fellow coalition leaders following an attack at an event held at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Foundation (JOOF) offices.
The incident, which occurred during a meeting presided over by Odinga, has raised concerns about security protocols at political gatherings.
In a statement released on Thursday, July 18, Odinga strongly condemned the attack and assured the affected journalists and leaders that steps are being taken to rectify the security breaches.
"Raila Odinga regrets the events of yesterday and takes this opportunity to offer unreserved apologies to the journalists and fellow leaders who were caught up in the unfortunate incident," stated his spokesperson, Dennis Onyango.
Odinga's statement emphasized the coalition's commitment to reviewing the incident and improving security measures. "Odinga assures journalists and fellow leaders that the coalition will review the events and address the security breaches," Onyango added.
The apology follows a chaotic scene on Wednesday when a group of over 30 youths disrupted the Azimio meeting shortly after Odinga departed from the venue.
The disruption occurred during a speech by Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka.
A video obtained by The Standard shows the young men storming the tent, causing a commotion that interrupted the proceedings and endangered the attendees.
Journalists present to cover the event were caught in the fray, a situation Odinga has expressed deep regret over.
The unexpected disruption forced the leaders to be swiftly escorted to safety, prematurely ending the press briefing.
The briefing was initially intended to announce the Azimio Coalition's stance against participating in President William Ruto's proposed broad-based talks.
