Abduction or Activism? Senator Omtatah Breaks Silence on Arrest of Morara Kebaso

Lawyer Morara Kebaso

Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah has come out and condemned the arrest of lawyer-turned-activist Morara Kebaso.

According to the Senator, the arrest of Morara is an act meant to silence his opposition against the government.

Through a statement via X on Monday, September 30, Omtatah noted that Kebaso was arrested simply because he exercised his right to criticize the administration.

"Earlier today, police unjustly abducted Morara Kebaso simply for exercising his right to critique KK government. To our dismay, the authorities have not only refused to release him but have also failed to formally charge him,” the Senator stated.

“It is appalling that abductions and arbitrary arrests continue to plague our country. Such actions not only undermine the principles of justice but also threaten the very foundations of our democracy.”

Omtatah expressed his dismay at the refusal by the authorities to release Kebaso yet so far he has not been booked on formal charges.

He called upon Kebaso's immediate release from custody and pointed out that the authorities were given a full day to bring him before the court but instead they chose to deny him his fundamental rights.

Omtatah said in a statement of solidarity: "We stand as one against these human rights violations and are not shut up. Together we shall not be cowed by fear to raise our voices."

This comes against a backdrop of rising tensions over the treatment of activists in the country.

Morara Kebaso was reportedly arrested at his office in Kahawa Sukari on Monday evening.

According to lawyer Pareno Solonka, a close associate of Kebaso, the vocal government critic is being held at the Regional Police Headquarters, where access has been denied to both lawyers and members of the press.

Protests erupted outside the Regional Police Headquarters on Monday evening and police were forced to use tear gas to disperse demonstrators demanding his release.

Solonka said on social media that police had informed them that they were given express orders to prevent any legal representatives or media personnel from seeing Kebaso.

The arrest comes weeks after Kebaso claimed in an interview that the DCI had been tailing him because of his campaigns against graft in government.
