Governor Dr. Bii Launches Environmental Campaign as Eldoret Prepares for City Status

Uasin Gishu Governor Dr. Jonathan Bii launched a comprehensive tree planting and clean-up campaign in Eldoret on Tuesday, ahead of the town's anticipated elevation to city status on August 15, 2024.

During his address, Governor Bii highlighted the dual benefits of tree planting for urban air quality and climate change mitigation.

"As we prepare Eldoret for city status, it is essential that we not only focus on infrastructure but also on enhancing our environment. Trees will play an important role in improving air quality, enhancing the beauty of our city, and mitigating climate change," the county boss stated.

The governor stressed the importance of environmental sustainability as a key aspect of the town's transition to city status.

This local campaign aligns with President William Samoei Ruto's national objective of planting 15 billion trees by 2030, a monumental effort to increase Kenya's tree cover.

Environment CECM Dr. Sam Kottut echoed the governor's sentiments, calling on residents to actively participate in environmental conservation efforts.

He emphasized the collective responsibility of the community to ensure a clean and green future for Eldoret.

The campaign has garnered widespread support, with active participation from various sectors, including community groups, local organizations, and volunteers.

Among the notable participants were the Red Cross, Diesel Power, Environment CECM Dr. Sam Kottut, Roads CECM Eng. Joseph Lagat, and Chief Officer for Environment Mary Kerich.
