Githunguri MP, Hon. Gathoni Wamuchomba, has raised serious concerns over the increasing number of deadly hyena attacks in Nyacaba, Juja, Kiambu County.
In a statement on Wednesday, September 11, she suggested a more sinister plot behind the hyena menace, claiming the animals may be part of a scheme to cover up other activities in the area.
During a visit to Flati Village on Tuesday accompanied by the area MP, she expressed fears that the government's reluctance to eradicate the animals indicated deeper issues.
"It’s now clear there is a sinister motive behind the predator hyenas of Juja," Wamuchomba said. "What would the government be covering up by shielding these deadly beasts?"
She expressed concerns over the loss of life in the area, where the hyenas have already claimed 16 victims, with innocent children now at risk. "Must we lose the 17th person to these beasts? Worst of all, innocent children?"
Wamuchomba's comments come as locals express frustration with Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) officials, who have advised them not to kill the animals, suspecting that the hyenas could be rabid.
The MP questioned how rabid animals could be allowed to continue posing a threat, demanding more urgent government intervention.
On September 6, KWS issued guidelines to the public, urging them to limit nighttime movement, dispose of waste properly to avoid attracting the animals, and avoid tampering with traps set up to capture the hyenas.
State House advisor Moses Kuria added to the debate, claiming that a "new, aggressive species" of hyenas has been identified in Kiambu County.
In a statement on September 7, Kuria remarked that historically, hyenas and humans have coexisted peacefully in the area, but the recent incidents suggest a dangerous shift.
The rising number of attacks has left residents fearful and calling for immediate action, with many now questioning what more might be lurking behind the escalating crisis.
