Political theorist Abuga Makori has raised concerns over ODM's future, suggesting the party would fare better under younger leadership, specifically Dr. Babu Owino and Edwin Sifuna.
Makori believes Raila Odinga's actions suggest he is reluctant to involve young people in critical leadership and decision-making roles.
He stated that unless Raila allows for the inclusion of fresh, younger leaders, ODM risks becoming a tribal or regional party by the 2027 elections.
"To be honest, ODM future would be brighter under Dr. Babu Owino and Edwin Sifuna. Whatever Raila Odinga is doing shows he doesn't want young people near power or negotiation tables. He should inject fresh blood in ODM for longevity. It will be reduced to a tribal/local party in 2027," he stated.
This discussion emerged after former Prime Minister Raila Odinga appointed Kisumu Governor Anyang' Nyong'o to lead ODM during his absence.
The move comes as Raila focuses on his campaign for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship, necessitating his absence from local party affairs.
ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna, addressing the media on Wednesday, confirmed the appointment following a Central Management Committee meeting chaired by Raila.
The meeting focused on reviewing party affairs and broader national issues. Sifuna emphasized that ODM remains committed to transparency and democratic principles, aiming to dispel rumors and speculation surrounding internal party decisions.
“These regular meetings allow us to review the current state of affairs as a party founded on values of democracy, multi-party democracy, and participation of the people,” Sifuna remarked, adding that ODM always communicates its decisions to the public with openness.
With Raila shifting focus to the African Union, calls for generational change within ODM continue to build, as many believe a rejuvenated leadership could better guide the party in the coming years.
