Probe Launched After KCSE Student Collapses Following Alleged Slap by Ministry of Education Official

A Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) candidate from Sironga Girls High School in Bogichora, Nyamira County, collapsed on Tuesday, November 12 following an alleged altercation with a Ministry of Education official.

According to a police report, the incident unfolded around 9 am when Beatrice Kendi, a Quality Assurance officer, entered an examination room to conduct a routine inspection. 

Observing the student chewing a substance she suspected might be prohibited, Kendi reportedly questioned the candidate. 

“Officials visited the school and established that during the morning examination session at around 9 am in room no 9 an official from the Ministry of Education (Quality Assurance) namely Beatrice Kendi made a snap check in the said room, upon entry she saw one female student chewing something which she suspected to be unauthorized material,” the report read in part.

Following a search that yielded no evidence of contraband, Kendi allegedly slapped the student multiple times.

After the incident, the student appeared distressed and, as the examination session concluded around 10 am, she collapsed. 

School staff rushed her to the school dispensary, where she received first aid before being discharged.

Later, the student was admitted to a hospital for further treatment.

In response, officials from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have launched an investigation. 

Security and education representatives visited Sironga Girls High School to gather further information.

This occurrence comes on the heels of another tragic event at the school in which a form four student reportedly fell from the second floor of a hostel and later died from her injuries at Nyamira Level Five Hospital.
