13 People Feared Dead After Fatal Accident on Nakuru-Muhoroni Highway

Over ten people are feared dead and several others critically injured after a tragic accident occurred at Kipsitet in Kericho along the Nakuru-Muhoroni Highway on Tuesday, September 3.

The accident involved a Londiani-bound lorry which lost control and rammed into a 14-seater matatu heading to Kisumu.

According to eyewitnesses, the lorry lost control and hit the matatu after hitting a pothole.

Police and local rescuers responded swiftly and rushed to the scene to help free individuals trapped under the wreckage.

Amateur photos shared widely on social media portrayed the matatu with shattered windows and the lorry’s front which was severely damaged with a broken windscreen.

Kericho County Commander Geoffrey Mayek confirmed the incident and said that the lorry driver fled the scene after the accident. He further stated that an investigation into the accident's cause has been launched.

The bodies of the deceased have been transported to St Vincent Mission Hospital for identification by relatives.

The incident comes just days after another fatal accident claimed the lives of twelve people at Nithi Bridge on the Nairobi-Meru highway.

While confirming the unfortunate accident, Tharaka Nithi County Police Commander Zacchaeus Ng'eno said that the victims were traveling from a family event in Meru.

The Police Commander said that the driver in that incident was unfamiliar with the highway and was driving in the wrong lane before the accident.
