The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has strongly opposed a story published by the Daily Nation that speculated on the retirement of the party’s leader, Rt. Hon. Raila Odinga.
In a press release issued earlier today, ODM Secretary General Hon. Sen. Edwin Sifuna denounced the article as a misleading and baseless attempt to incite chaos within the party and among its supporters.
The article reportedly suggested that Odinga was preparing to step down from the party’s leadership, igniting alleged internal rivalries within ODM.
Sifuna dismissed these claims, stating they were “incoherent” and lacked any factual basis.
“Several times, Rt. Hon. Raila Odinga has informed the country that he will be presenting himself for election to the position of chairman of the African Union Commission during elections scheduled for February 2025,” the press release read.
According to Sifuna, neither Odinga nor the ODM has made any announcement regarding his retirement.
The Secretary-General accused Daily Nation of acting in bad faith, claiming the report was designed to create despondency among party supporters and fuel non-existent rivalries within the party ranks.
“We therefore see no reason whatsoever for the Daily Nation to come up with a screaming headline announcing Mr. Odinga’s retirement, complete with an incoherent purported analysis of his life and times as leader of ODM,” Sifuna added.
The ODM Secretary-General also called on the Daily Nation to issue a categorical clarification, criticizing the publication for failing to meet professional standards.
“We expect the Daily Nation to be professional enough and issue a categorical clarification that the story published today had no basis and served no professional purpose,” the statement emphasized.
ODM has urged its supporters to treat the article with the “contempt it deserves” and remain united in the face of what it called attempts to destabilize the party.
