Police in South Imenti have launched investigations into the death of a Form Three student from Kithunguri Secondary School in Abogeeta East, who drowned at the killer Kithinu Waterfall.
The sad incident occurred on Saturday, October 19, when the student fell into River Kithinu at a waterfall known within the area.
Preliminary reports suggested that the student, whose identity is not revealed, was swept away by the strong water current even as he was walking alongside the river's bank, despite the locals' attempts to save him.
Relatives and friends are mourning the loss with many expressing their condolences to the family of the deceased.
According to residents, this is not the first time such an incident has happened at the Kithinu Waterfall.
Local authorities have repeatedly warned against swimming in the area because of the dangerous currents, but the waterfall still attracts visitors.
"We want the authorities to intervene and assist us. It is now time for precautions so we do not continue to lose more lives here," said one of the residents.
At the same time, local leaders are calling for more safety precautions and better signs to avert other catastrophes in the future.
They warn visitors to pay heed to the warning and take good care of their safety while visiting such places.
The body has since been recovered as the investigation continues.
The incident comes barely a week after another similar tragedy. On Sunday, October 13, a first-year psychology student at Egerton University, Brian Muriungi, lost his life in the Njoro Caves waterfall. Reports indicate that he was with friends enjoying the picturesque location when the unfortunate event took place.
