Eldoret Joins Kenya’s Elite as It Gains Official City Status

President William Ruto has officially elevated Eldoret to city status, making it Kenya’s fifth city alongside Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, and Nakuru.

The historic conferment ceremony occurred at Eldoret Sports Club in Uasin Gishu County, on Thursday, August 15, 2024.

This milestone event was particularly significant for the town, known as the "City of Champions," with many athletes in attendance, including those who recently represented Kenya at the Paris Olympics, where the nation secured 11 medals.

President Ruto signed the city charter during the ceremony, formally sealing Eldoret’s new status.

“I, Kipchirchir William Samoei Ruto, president of the Republic of Kenya and Commander in Chief of Kenya’s Defence Forces, do hereby ordain, declare, and direct that the municipality of Eldoret has been conferred with city status,” Ruto declared.

The event was not only a celebration of Eldoret’s elevation but also an opportunity to honor Kenya's Olympic champions.

At a breakfast meeting held at the Eldoret State Lodge, President Ruto recognized the outstanding achievements of the athletes who excelled at the Paris Olympics.

He awarded cash prizes to the medalists, with gold medalists receiving Ksh3 million per medal, silver medalists Ksh2 million, and bronze medalists Ksh1 million.

Among the top recipients was Beatrice Chebet, who earned Ksh6 million for her double gold victories in the 5000m and 10,000m races.

Eldoret's new city status is set to boost its economic and social development, further establishing its reputation as a hub of athletic excellence and a key city in Kenya's growth.
