Governor Bii Advocates for Investment and Job Growth as Eldoret Becomes Kenya's Fifth City

Uasin Gishu Governor Dr. Jonathan Bii has called on county residents to embrace Eldoret’s new city status and contribute actively to its development.

The city was officially granted this status on Thursday, August 15, in a grand ceremony at Eldoret Sports Club, presided over by President William Samoei Ruto.

Speaking at the ceremony, Governor Bii stressed the historic significance of this milestone for the region and expressed profound gratitude to President Ruto.

"Today marks a historic moment as we gather to witness the city status charter. August 15, 2024, will forever be etched in Kenya’s history as the day Eldoret ascended to city status," Bii stated.

Governor Bii acknowledged Eldoret’s impressive growth over the years, attributing it to the unwavering vision and dedication of its residents.

He pointed out that the new city status is expected to accelerate economic development, aligning with the national government’s Bottom-Up Economic Agenda.

“This achievement marks the beginning of new opportunities and prosperity for all who live, work, and do business in Eldoret,” the governor said.

Eldoret, a key economic hub in the region, recently reported an all-time high of Ksh1.4 billion in own-source revenue collection under the Sisibo Pay System.

In healthcare, the county boss stated that the county has made significant strides, including the introduction of drone services to facilitate the transportation of medical supplies and test results.

Additionally, the Mama Rachel Ruto Hospital, launched by the First Lady, has already delivered over 100 babies, demonstrating the county's commitment to improving maternal and child health.

Governor Bii outlined plans to address unemployment by attracting investment opportunities.

“My vision is to enhance business and employment opportunities by attracting investors,” he said.

He shared insights into an upcoming international investment conference workshop aimed at showcasing the region’s potential, particularly in agriculture.

The county has supported 40,000 farmers with mechanized farming and high-value crops, including coffee, macadamia, avocado, and pyrethrum seedlings.

The governor also highlighted ongoing affordable housing projects, in line with President Ruto’s agenda. These include the construction of modern houses and the development of the county’s Export Processing Zone (EPZ) in Cherunya.

Additionally, a modern market, also inaugurated by President Ruto, is under construction, further contributing to the county’s economic growth.

Governor Bii urged the Commission on Revenue Allocation (CRA) to develop a new funding model for cities that aligns with Eldoret’s elevated status and future ambitions.

Looking ahead, Governor Bii unveiled ambitious plans for Eldoret, including the development of a 100-year city master plan, the establishment of world-class stadia, enhancement of the creative arts sector, and expansion of road infrastructure.

The event was attended by Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, First Lady Mama Rachel Ruto, National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula, Senate Speaker Amason Kingi, and other prominent government officials.
