Six School Children Killed in Tragic Road Accident in Kitui

Six school-going children were tragically killed in a road accident at the Wiitu shopping centre along the Kitui-Kibwezi road on Friday morning.

According to reports, the incident occurred at around 6:20 am as the children were crossing the road on their way to school.

National Police Service spokesperson, Dr. Resila Onyango, confirmed the incident and said that the victims included three students from Kyaoni Primary and three from Kyaoni Secondary School.

Among the deceased were five girls. The children died on the spot after being hit by a speeding Probox car.

Ikutha Deputy County Commissioner, Vincent Lomachary, confirmed that the vehicle was speeding when it struck the learners.

He termed the accident tragic and noted that the driver fled the scene immediately but later surrendered himself to the Mutomo Police Station.

Authorities have arrested the driver and impounded the vehicle as investigations continue.

The accident is the latest in a series of fatal road crashes in the country.

According to the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), up to 4,000 people die annually in road accidents.

Speeding, improper overtaking, and vehicles losing control are among the leading causes of such accidents.

Efforts to curb road fatalities are ongoing, but incidents remain a serious concern.
