Police in Eldoret have arrested two senior officials of Silver Bells Academy, a private school in the Kimumu area, for allegedly administering fake Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) exams to 23 Grade 6 pupils.
The two, identified as the director and principal of the school, are under investigation for allegedly providing students with photocopies of previous KPSEA papers in place of this year’s official assessment.
In a statement on Tuesday, October 30, Moiben Sub-county Commissioner Dancan Okwach confirmed the arrest and revealed that the school was not officially registered with the Ministry of Education.
At the same time, the 23 students were ineligible to participate in the nationally recognized assessment, which is required for progression to Grade 7 in the following academic year.
Parents raised concerns on Monday after their children missed the official KPSEA exams.
According to Uasin Gishu County Police Commander Benjamin Mwanthi, the school management initially told parents that the exam papers had been misplaced.
However, by Tuesday, suspicions grew when the students were subjected to what appeared to be counterfeit exams, prompting parents to involve both police and educational authorities.
"We have arrested the director and the principal over exam malpractices and operating the school illegally," Mwanthi noted.
He further added that, according to initial investigations, the institution was not registered with the Ministry of Education and was operating in substandard conditions.
The school reportedly has a population of 279 pupils, who stand to lose their institution should the County Director of Education close it pending further investigations.
Teams from the Ministry of Education, KNEC, and DCI are conducting an inquiry in the school.
