Nakuru High School main gate |
Nakuru High School has been closed indefinitely after students staged a violent protest on Sunday night, February 9, over grievances related to food and school policies.
According to reports, the protest began at 8:50 p.m. and lasted for six hours before police intervened.
During the demonstration, students damaged classrooms, dormitories, and the administration block.
They also broke into the dining hall and storage room, taking food and eating some of it on the spot.
The protests were sparked by the removal of their mid-morning tea and bread, which had previously been a staple for students.
The students were also angered by the introduction of a new card system for purchasing items at the school canteen, preferring to pay in cash as they had in the past.
Furthermore, some students accused the administration of neglecting their welfare after milk was removed from the morning tea.
The other grievance was that the management had failed to improve the entertainment facilities despite students making some contributions toward the project.
Some of the students also felt frustrated with the new principal of the school, whom they claimed was being too hard on them.
The protest intensified and police were called to contain the situation.
Nakuru County Director of Education, Victoria Mulili, also intervened in efforts to calm the situation.
By Monday, February 10, the school was deserted, with the students sent home.
There are reports that the school might be closed for at least a week, though the administration would communicate the decision on when students will go back to school for studies.
