A fun day out turned into a heartbreaking tragedy after two university students drowned at a popular recreation spot off Thika Road in the Mugutha area.
According to reports, the two victims, aged 21 and 22, had reportedly gone swimming in the scenic yet treacherous dam when disaster struck.
Police reported that the two were students from the nearby Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture Technology.
Their bodies were retrieved on Sunday, March 2 by Kiambu County divers and taken to the General Kago Funeral Home as authorities continue investigations.
This location, widely known for its “park and chill” atmosphere, has gained a reputation as both a recreational hotspot and a danger zone.
A similar disaster was witnessed in January 2023 when a man and a woman died after their vehicle rolled into the dam.

Residents recall hearing desperate calls for help at around 7:30 p.m. while bystanders watched in shock.
"I heard a woman shrieking; she was in the water struggling to swim and rescue herself but there were no divers nearby," stated Lucy Muthoni, an eyewitness to the 2023 incident.
Even with attempts to fence the place after the last incident, the area has continued to be a top place of pilgrimage for party-goers, and beer bottles are common along the edges.
Later, a restaurant and bar were erected, charging tourists Ksh.100 as entrance fee, and offering Wi-Fi services.
Officials are now facing fresh pressure to boost security at the dam amid rising concern over the absence of proper security and emergency response in the region.
