Raila Odinga Breaks Silence After Conceding Defeat in AUC Chair Race

Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga

Former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga has accepted defeat in the race for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairperson.

Speaking on Saturday, February 15, Odinga recognized the democratic process and expressed gratitude for the support he received, even though he didn’t make it through the final round of voting.

He further expressed gratitude to his supporters and wished his opponent, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, success in his new role.

"The voting was a secret ballot, so you cannot tell who voted for you or against you, but I am sure that most of my friends voted for me," he said. "I therefore concede defeat and want us to use this as an example of strengthening democracy on our continent. I wish Mahamoud Ali Youssouf all the best and success in his undertaking."

Youssouf, the Foreign Minister of Djibouti, emerged as the winner in the closely fought election during the African Union meeting in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

The behind-closed-doors voting process took seven rounds. Odinga won the first two rounds with 20 and 22 votes, respectively, but Youssouf picked up support in the later rounds, achieving the necessary 33 votes in the seventh round to become the chairperson.

Youssouf will now serve a four-year term, succeeding Moussa Faki of Chad, who has led the African Union Commission since 2017.

At the same time, President William Ruto congratulated Youssouf and his deputy, Selma Haddadi, while appreciating Raila Odinga’s efforts in the competitive race.

"While the outcome of this election did not favor Kenya’s candidate, I wish to convey my deepest gratitude to the entire leadership of our great continent. Thank you for considering the Right Honourable Raila Odinga’s vision and priorities for the African Union and for giving him the opportunity to share his passion for the continent’s transformation," Ruto said.

He further pledged Kenya’s support for the new AUC leadership, affirming the country’s commitment to the African Union’s vision.
