Ex-Lover of Celebrated Athlete Rebeca Cheptegei is Dead

Dickson Ndiema Marangach, the former partner of Olympian Rebeca Cheptegei, died on Monday night at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) in Eldoret.

Ndiema had been battling severe burns in the ICU, just days after Cheptegei succumbed to her injuries in the same hospital.

The tragic sequence of events began on September 2, when Ndiema allegedly attacked Cheptegei at their home in Trans-Nzoia County.

According to police reports, Ndiema doused Cheptegei with petrol and set her on fire following a domestic dispute.

The incident left Cheptegei, a prominent Ugandan athlete, with burns covering over 80 percent of her body, while Ndiema sustained burns on over 30 percent of his own body.

Neighbors, alerted by Cheptegei’s distress calls, rushed both victims to Kitale Level Four Hospital before they were transferred to MTRH due to the severity of their injuries.

Despite the efforts of medical staff, Cheptegei passed away after her organs failed. Ndiema's condition worsened over the following days, and he died shortly thereafter.

Trans-Nzoia County Police Commander Jeremiah Ole Kosiom confirmed that Ndiema was under investigation and was set to face multiple charges, including attempted murder.

Evidence collected at the scene included a jerrycan believed to have contained petrol, a burnt mobile phone, and personal items belonging to Ndiema.

Cheptegei’s family, led by her father, Mzee Joseph Cheptegei, is preparing to lay her to rest on Saturday in Bukwo, Uganda, with full military honors.

A postmortem on Cheptegei's body is scheduled for Wednesday, after which her remains will be taken to her home in Endebes, Trans-Nzoia, for a night vigil before being transported to Uganda.
