Activist Mercy Tarus has accused certain figures of undermining genuine civic engagement in Kenya.
In a statement on Wednesday, September 18, Tarus claimed that these individuals, who initially appeared committed to the cause, have progressively shifted their focus from civic education to political rallying, thereby exploiting the movement for personal gain.
"Now I believe there are people who are funded to confuse the revolution," Tarus asserted. She accused these individuals of using her name and initiatives to advance their own political ambitions while disguising their true intentions under the guise of civic engagement.
According to Tarus, what started as a movement for civic education has deteriorated into mere political maneuvering.
She criticized these actors for failing to contribute meaningfully and instead consolidating people around themselves, similar to established politicians.
"You cannot claim to be conducting any civic education and engagement by consolidating people around you like the same politicians for your selfish gains," she remarked.
Tarus emphasized that true civic engagement requires more than just hype and temporary highs.
She expressed frustration with those who, despite seeking her advice and insights, end up misappropriating her ideas and initiatives.
"Be creative. Come up with your own," she urged. Tarus also accused them of avoiding accountability and structure, preferring instead to leverage existing movements to avoid blame.
Tarus reaffirmed her commitment to genuine civic engagement, declaring, "Kenya Ni Home and home must be respected!"
