Govt Announces Date for Free Entry to Maasai Mara and Other National Parks

On September 28, 2024, Kenyans will be allowed to visit parks such as the world-famous Maasai Mara, Tsavo, Amboseli, and Nairobi National Park at no cost.

The government has announced that all national parks across the country will offer free entry in celebration of the United Nations World Tourism Day.

Tourism CS Rebecca Miano explained through a statement on X on Wednesday, September 18, that the move, coupled with the UN World Tourism Day, aims to boost local tourism and have Kenyans appreciate the vast natural beauty the country has to offer without paying a cent.

"In our quest to promote and encourage local tourism, that momentous opportunity is finally here! Save the date," she wrote.

On Tuesday, September 17, President William Ruto chaired a cabinet meeting and approved the move.

According to CS Miano, this day is a countrywide drive to make parks in Kenya more accessible and affordable for its citizens, most of whom have never gotten an opportunity to explore the iconic wildlife reserves.

The free entry day will further add fuel to the awareness about the importance of conservation and responsible tourism.

However, non-residents will still be required to pay the standard entry fees, which have been revised upwards this year.

Entry fees for these parks can range from USD 100 per day for non-resident adults at the Maasai Mara, making this an offer that hardly comes by to allow citizens to visit their heritage sites without financial hindrances.

Kenya’s nature tourism and wildlife remain among the key contributors to the national economy, considering the actual number of visitors in the country every year.
