Former KNUT Secretary General Wilson Sossion has weighed in on the escalating political rift in Mt. Kenya, emphasizing that the internal conflicts are unrelated to President William Ruto.
In an interview on Thursday, September 19, Sossion remarked, “It begins in Mt. Kenya and it ends in Mt. Kenya. It has nothing to do with President Ruto. The problem is that DP Gachagua is having issues with his own MPs.”
On September 18, Njuri Ncheke elders endorsed Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki as the key leader for Mt. Kenya East. This area includes Embu, Meru, and Tharaka Nithi counties.
The elders' decision tasks Kindiki with acting as the crucial link between Mt. Kenya East and the national government.
During a press briefing, the chairperson pointed out the rationale behind the endorsement: “To ensure we remain focused on development, we endorse Prof. Kithure Kindiki to be the link between our region, the President, and his government. We believe his national stature will help foster good relations with other regions.”
The endorsement is seen as a direct challenge to Deputy President Gachagua, who has been criticized by a section of MPs for allegedly undermining the government and employing intimidation tactics against his critics.
Sossion emphasized that while impeachment is a constitutional option for any elected official in Kenya, including the President, it is not the right route in this case.
"Impeachment should not be considered, as Rigathi Gachagua is an elder and leader of the mountain and should be able to make peace with the MPs from the mountain," he stated.
Leaders including Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichung’wah have been vocal against Gachagua and claimed that the deputy President is mobilizing the region for tribal politics.
At the same time, Gachagua’s allies, such as Kiambu Senator Karungo wa Thang'wa, have countered by accusing senior officials of disrespecting Gachagua and plotting his removal.
