Over 100 families have been left homeless following a devastating fire that swept through Kawangware, Nairobi, on Thursday night.
Reports indicate that the fire broke out at about 7:30 PM and left at least eight people critically injured and 160 homes reduced to ashes.
Witnesses described scenes of flames engulfing the area as the residents scampered for safety and shelter from the chaotic scenes.
The Kenya Red Cross Society immediately dispatched a rescue team to assist the affected and contain the situation.
In a statement, they made it clear that overcoming the fire was an achievement of the joint effort between the residents and firefighters.
"The fire in Kawangware has been brought under control with the help from members of the public. However, 160 homesteads have been reduced to ashes. Kenya Red Cross has treated 8 casualties," they said.
Photos shared on social media captured a devastating sight: families standing by and watching their homes and properties turn to ashes in the inferno.
While the fire brigades did an exemplary job trying to put out the fire, the source has not yet been traced, and the police have started conducting an investigation.
This adds to the list of the recent fire outbreaks in Nairobi, another one having taken place in Mukuru Kwa Njenga just some days ago.
Community leaders call for increased measures regarding fire prevention to avert such tragedies in the future.
