A woman is recovering at Naivasha Subcounty Hospital after being viciously attacked by her husband over Sh200.
Reports indicate that on Monday, Rose Wanja, 38, was assaulted by her husband, who, in an intoxicated state and accusing her of theft, locked her in a room and beat her with a metal rod.
Attempts by neighbors to intervene were unsuccessful. The attack came to light only when Wanja's niece reported it to the police two days later. The husband has been detained.
Wanja, a mother of three, has a long history of domestic abuse.
Her husband was previously convicted for killing their two-month-old baby with a metal rod nine years ago and served a three-year prison sentence.
Currently, Wanja faces severe injuries, including a fractured pelvis, which will impact her mobility for several months, according to Deputy Chief Nurse Benjamin Mwaura.
The hospital, dealing with frequent cases of gender-based violence, had recently treated another domestic abuse victim.
John Kinuthia, Naivasha GBV cluster coordinator, assured that Wanja will receive necessary shelter and psychosocial support.
He highlighted the rise in gender-based violence, often linked to mental health issues and economic challenges, especially in Naivasha’s Kabati, Kinamba, Karati, and Mai Mahiu areas.
Kinuthia praised the prompt actions of the police and judiciary but urged victims to report such incidents immediately.
The government is working towards eradicating gender-based violence by 2026, supported by gender desks at police stations.
Despite existing laws, reports of violence continue to be a daily reality.
The 2022 Kenya Demographic Health Survey reveals that over 31% of women in Nakuru aged 15-49 have experienced partner violence, with 24% reporting physical violence since age 15.
