Kericho Governor Eric Mutai |
Kericho County Governor, Eric Mutai, has been impeached by the County Assembly in a vote supported by 31 members to see him removed from office.
According to reports, he is being impeached based on allegations of gross constitutional violations, abuse of office, and misuse of public resources.
The motion, tabled by Sigowet Ward MCA Kiprotich Rogony, accused Governor Mutai of severe acts including leading a mob to seize private land in Kericho town that would be used as an unapproved dumpsite.
Rogony also accused the governor of forcing women into illicit sexual relations, adding further to the list of charges.
Whereas the governor Mutai was expected to appear before the assembly in his defense, he never appeared throughout the session. He was represented by a legal team, headed by Katwa Kigen.
The impeachment process, according to Mutai, had been restrained through a court order. However, reports claim that the order was not served on time leading to the motion going on as scheduled.
The matter will now be referred to the Senate, where the assembly speaker is expected to inform the senators of the impeachment.
The Senate will debate the charges against Governor Mutai and determine whether to uphold the impeachment or overturn the same.
