Tension Flare in Eldoret as Supporters and Opponents of Gachagua's Impeachment Face Off

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua

Eldoret City experienced tension on Friday as two opposing groups clashed during a public participation event regarding the impeachment motion against Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

According to reports, the event was held at the Uasin Gishu County Hall, necessitating the deployment of hundreds of anti-riot police to manage the situation.

Many residents signed the public participation forms, but only a few were able to speak at the forum.

The atmosphere grew chaotic when youths supporting Gachagua's ouster stormed the venue, prompting police to intervene and remove some of the disruptive individuals.

A resident who signed the impeachment petition, Ngetich, stated, “We should not be dragged into problems of an individual who is so interested in personal gains,” reflecting the views of some in attendance.

Leaders in the region, including Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii, did not attend the forum amid the tensions.

Another resident, Jane Kimeli, expressed her opposition to the impeachment, saying, “If it’s impeachment then they have to go together,” referring to both President William Ruto and Deputy President Gachagua.

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua is facing an impeachment motion after it was tabled in the National Assembly on Tuesday by Kibwezi West MP Mutuse Eckomas Mwengi.
