Kenya Meteorological Department Warns of Heavy Weekend Rains Across Multiple Regions

The Kenya Meteorological Department has warned Kenyans in different regions to brace themselves for intermittent rainfall, both of moderate and heavy intensity, from Friday to Sunday.

The weather department identified five areas likely to be badly hit in the five-day weather forecast: the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, and the Coast.

Counties expected to receive moderate rainfall include Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang'a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi, and Nairobi.

The coastal counties of Mombasa, Tana River, Kilifi, Lamu, and Kwale are likely to have light rains.

The department added that very high rains are also set to be recorded in Siaya, Kisumu, Homabay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, and Uasin Gishu, and these will happen in the afternoons with thunderstorms.

Motorists were advised to exercise caution, especially in flood-prone areas.

Other counties that are likely to witness similar weather conditions throughout the weekend include Elgeyo-Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia and West Pokot.

The weatherman forecasts moderate rains in Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado, and Taita Taveta counties in the Eastern Lowland, while the rest of the country is expected to remain dry and sunny.

The rains are expected in the afternoon with sunny intervals in the morning.

KMD also issued a temperature advisory, warning that very cold night temperatures dropping as low as 6°C are expected over the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, and including Nyandarua, Laikipia and Nairobi, for the first two days.

Nighttime temperatures over Highlands West, Lake Victoria Basin, and Rift Valley regions are expected to reach 11°C.

In addition to that, daytime maximum temperatures are expected to reach 37°C in areas such as Turkana, Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, and Isiolo.

Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado, Taita Taveta, and coastal counties are the other places that record high daytime temperatures.
