Shiners Boys Murder Suspects to Sit KCSE Exams from Custody as DCI Takes Over Investigation

Shiners Boys High School

The four suspects involved in the murder of a candidate at Shiners Boys High School will be allowed to sit for their Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exams while in custody.

Education Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang confirmed this during the opening of an examination container in Nakuru on Monday, November 11.

In a statement, Kipsang said that a multi-agency team is currently investigating the incident and that the suspects will complete their exams as they await legal proceedings.

"We want the security teams to proceed from the point they have reached. The candidates will do the exam from wherever they are and thereafter we shall conclude the process but I leave it to the security and criminal system to deal with that and I am sure they will be taken to court," he said.

The suspects, who were previously suspended from the institution, had returned to the school to sit for their exams when they found their belongings destroyed and suspected the victim may have been involved in the destruction of the items.

The prime suspect, Dak, a Sudanese national, fled the scene after the crime but was apprehended by police on Sunday in Nairobi, having traveled overnight.

Police reports indicate that Dak’s accomplices, who are also in custody, are expected to serve as witnesses in the case.

At the same time, police have raised concerns regarding the level of indiscipline at the school, particularly with regard to how the murder weapon—a knife—was brought onto the premises.

The matter has been handed over to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) for further investigation.
