The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has issued a weather alert for the next five days, warning Kenyans across various regions to brace for moderate to heavy rainfall, colder nights, and warmer daytime temperatures.
According to a weekly advisory released on Monday, November 11, KMD indicated that rainfall would impact regions across the country, with varying intensities and times of day.
The Met Department has forecasted that parts of the Highlands East of the Rift Valley — including Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi, and Nairobi — should prepare for moderate rains.
The rains are expected to begin in the mornings, continue into the afternoons, and in some cases, extend into the night.
Heavy rainfall and thunderstorms are forecasted for counties within the Lake Victoria Basin, Western Kenya, and parts of the Rift Valley, specifically Siaya, Kisumu, Homabay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet, and Nandi.
Residents in these areas are cautioned to prepare for potential flooding, as rains are expected to last for several hours each day.
Additional counties, including Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia, and West Pokot, will experience a similar weather pattern with heavy downpours over the forecast period.
For Coastal and Northeastern Kenya — including Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, Isiolo, Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado, Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, and Kwale, as well as parts of Tana River County — occasional rains are expected to persist through the week.
The KMD advisory also highlighted a drop in nighttime temperatures across parts of the Highlands East region.
Counties such as Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi, and Nairobi may experience chilly nights, with temperatures forecasted to drop to 10°C from Tuesday to Thursday, before a slight rise to around 11°C for the rest of the week.
In contrast, Western Kenya, the Lake Victoria Basin, and parts of the Rift Valley are expected to experience warm daytime temperatures, reaching up to 33°C.
Counties under this advisory include Siaya, Kisumu, Homabay, Migori, Kisii, and Nyamira, along with Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet, and Nandi.
Other areas facing high daytime temperatures include Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia, West Pokot, Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, Isiolo, Mombasa, Tana River, Kilifi, Lamu, and Kwale.
