Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza |
Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza has stirred fresh controversy, accusing her Deputy Governor, Isaac Mutuma, of failing to discharge duties for over a year.
While speaking on Monday, December 2, Mwangaza said she had never seen or interacted with Mutuma in Cabinet meetings where critical county matters are discussed.
“For the last year and a half, he has not been on duty but continues to earn a full salary and use county resources,” Mwangaza stated, adding that multiple notifications inviting him to meetings had been ignored.
County Secretary Kiambi Atheru also expressed her worries as she announced that Mutuma had been absent in 12 Cabinet meetings that were held between November 2023 and November 2024.
In a letter to Mutuma dated December 2, Atheru reminded him of the need to attend the sessions and asked him to prioritize his work.
The bad blood between Mwangaza and Mutuma began with the impeachment battle between them at the Meru County Assembly in 2022 when the governor accused her deputy of colluding with her political rivals to bring down her administration.

The relationship has gotten worse since then, with allegations and counterclaims deepening the rift.
Mutuma accused Mwangaza of sidelining him by excluding him from key functions and decision-making processes, claiming that his official vehicles were confiscated and funds meant for his office withheld.
He added that some of his trusted staff in the office were unfairly dismissed.
However, Governor Mwangaza dismissed the accusations, citing a report from the County Public Service Board that some of Mutuma's staff had fake academic credentials.
The Board defended the dismissals on the basis of professional irregularities.
At the same time, Mwangaza has said that she remains focused on development projects and will not be swayed by internal wrangles.
