Drama unfolded in the Senate Thursday afternoon when Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua disappeared a few minutes before he mounted the witness stand in his impeachment trial.
The unexpected disappearance forced his legal team to halt their defense and request for additional time from the Senate Speaker, Amason Kingi.
Senior Counsel Paul Muite, representing Gachagua requested time to locate the deputy president.
"Honourable speaker, we are waiting for the deputy president and my colleagues can stand in for me. Let me make enquiries where he is," Muite said.
The absence of Gachagua led to calls from senators for the session to be adjourned.
Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale was among those urging Speaker Kingi to suspend the proceedings until the deputy president could be located.
Later, Muite informed the Senate that Gachagua had unexpectedly fallen ill and had been taken to the hospital.
He requested more time to assess the situation and consult with the deputy president's doctor.
"My proposal is that you give me at least the rest of the day to go and have an assessment of his situation and maybe even come back here by 5 pm. I would like to make an informed decision after I see the deputy president and I see the doctor," Muite stated.
Speaker Kingi directed the session to be adjourned to 5 pm where the Deputy President is expected to take the witness stand.
"Having considered the two sides, we will suspend this sitting and resume at exactly 5 PM. We expect the deputy president then to take the stand," he noted.
