The High Court in Eldoret has sentenced a 25-year-old woman to 35 years in prison for fatally stabbing her husband following a domestic altercation.
According to reports, Dorcas Ntinyari was convicted of murdering Felix Otieno, a construction worker, on November 8, 2023, at Kipkaren estate in Kapseret, Uasin Gishu County.
The court found that Ntinyari stabbed her husband once in the chest, causing his death on the spot at her sister’s home, where she had sought refuge after an ongoing marital dispute.
Delivering the verdict, Justice Nyakundi condemned the rising cases of domestic violence in the country, describing the trend as deeply concerning.
The prosecution stated that the couple had spent the previous night engaged in a heated argument, prompting Ntinyari to leave their home for her elder sister’s residence.

The following day, Otieno, reportedly intoxicated, pursued his wife and arrived at the house, finding the door locked from inside.
He pounded heavily, demanding that he be let in and asked for some of his own belongings, like a phone and sandals.
Ntinyari asked him to wait as she showered, but the victim grew impatient and shoved the door wide open. It is during this tussle that Ntinyari stabbed him to death.
During her mitigation, Ntinyari pleaded for leniency, claiming she acted in defense of herself.
Her lawyer, Tariko Kiptoo, urged the court to consider the history of the events preceding the incident while issuing the sentence.
In spite of the plea, the court found her guilty of murder, leading to the 35-year prison term.
