Former Kenyan Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) head Wafula Chebukati has passed away.
According to reports Chebukati died at 11 p.m. on Thursday, February 20, while undergoing medical care in a Nairobi hospital.
The family confirmed his death on Friday, February 21 morning.
Prior to his death, Chebukati, 63, had been in the hospital's intensive care unit for about a week.
Appointed as IEBC chairperson in January 2017, Chebukati served a six-year term, overseeing the 2017 and 2022 general elections.
In his farewell message upon retiring on January 17, 2023, he stated, "I exit contented that we gave it our best to this commission. We chartered and weathered storms that threatened the existence of the commission."

Before his tenure at the IEBC, Chebukati practiced law for 37 years.
He founded the Nairobi-based law firm Cootow & Associates Advocates in 2006, which he led until his resignation in 2017 to assume the IEBC role.
Chebukati joined politics in 2007 when he ran for the Saboti parliamentary seat on the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party ticket.
He lost the seat to Eugene Wamalwa of the Democratic Action Party-Kenya (DAP-K).
On 12 December 2022, while celebrating Jamhuri Day, President William Ruto awarded Chebukati the rank of Elder of the Order of the Golden Heart (EGH) for his services to the nation.
Chebukati leaves behind his wife, Mary, and three children, Rachel, Jonathan, and Emmanuel.
