Nandi Governor Stephen Sang |
Nandi County Governor Stephen Sang has ordered the sacking of more than 1,500 workers, recommended by a Public Service Commission human resource audit.
According to reports, the audit found massive irregularities in the county payroll, with many having received illegal appointments.
This marks a major effort to clean up the bloated payroll, which has swelled to more than 5,000 employees.
Sang warned that no one would be spared, even relatives or friends of the high-ranking officials.
He assured that his administration would fully implement the recommendations to ensure accountability of those who have been involved in the payroll fraud.
The sacked workers responded with threats to protest, which Sang has condemned and warned that any attempts to disrupt county operations would be treated as criminal acts.
The county government insists it still has 3,200 legitimate employees and services will continue uninterrupted.
This probe has been continuous since the suspension of payroll officers and the involvement of the Auditor General, who had also raised a red flag on irregular hiring.
Those found guilty of the fraud are likely to face the law while the fake appointments and promotions have since been revoked.
Governor Sang reiterated that he was committed to ensuring that Nandi has a professional and legally constituted public service.
